Myself and 11 other volunteers will be going to Malawi Bangwe this summer for 10 weeks with Students Volunteers Abroad (Scottish Registered Charity No. SC 030081) and working alongside the Malawian NGO Umunthu Foundation. SVA send groups of volunteers from the university to various under-privileged countries throughout the world every year.
The money we raise will be used towards achieving the following goals:
- To promote women's empowerment and gender equality
In order to do this we will be working with CECOWD to promote economic independence through Income Generating Activities (IGAs) such as piggeries, working with the girls and women of Malawi Bangwe to educate and discuss their rights/opportunities and organising a womens empowerment event for the end of project.
- To tutor young people with disabilities, including computer classes
Alongside non-formal teaching we will be helping with the construction of a larger teaching space as demand has grown significantly!
- To increase the competency and confidence of primary school children in speaking English
Volunteers will work across three different school; Bright Era, Namiyango and Chiedza. We will be teaching a range of subjects as well as organising extra-cirrucular activities.
- To assist local orphan care centres in sourcing and securing long-term financial donations or programmes to ensure continued running of the centres
Volunteers will spend time teaching and playing educational games with the children as well as working with the orphanages to source donations from local businesses.
- To raise HIV/AIDS awareness within the local community
Two volunteers will be administering HIV tests and other volunteers will be involved in post-test clubs where the people of Bangwe can get together and talk about anything. We will also be providing home based care and working to challenge stigmas in the community by being an education medium through which issues can be discussed and tackled!
